Velvet Furniture: The Luxe Home Trend You’re Either Already in Love With or About to Discover!

Your sofa is the focal point of your living room. It is the place where you make memories with your family and friends, where you watch TV while eating a pint of ice cream, where you give your dog a snuggle only to brush the hair off after – but it’s not his fault! The sofa comes in many shapes, sizes and materials, at varying price points depending on what you are looking for. Today, we are going to talk to you about the different types of sofas we have for you to choose from; from elegant leather corner units to traditional fabric 2-seaters.

With this breakdown, we are also going to remind you how to take care of your sofa – old or new – to have the longest life in your home! We will break this blog series into different sections based on materials to make it easier for you to navigate: Leather, Velvet, Linen and Fabric.

Today, we will focus on velvet!

Velvet is one of those fabrics that you either love or haven’t yet found the piece that will make you fall in love with it – for us, we love it! We love how it can be versatile with the colours, can be moulded into any shape for any product – it’s so versatile and equally as stunning! If you are a fan of bright colours in your home, or maybe you want to experiment with brightly coloured furniture, velvet is your best friend here. Our colours range from bright yellow to deep navy, vibrant teals to lush sea greens, rusty red to dusty pink; ours are endless! Similarly to other fabrics, there are many ways we can use velvet, like in armchairs, 2-seaters and 3-seaters. However, velvet is so versatile and popular, we make footstools, dining chairs and bed frames too.

Footstool:

Footstools go by many names, such as an ottoman, a pouffe, or the yoke in the middle of the room. Like the dressing gown versus house coat debate, whatever you call a footstool in your home, we always know what you are talking about! Footstools can come in many shapes and sizes depending on what you are looking for in your space. We can provide small square footstools, circular ones, or large rectangular ones in velvet. They can act as an extension of your sofa or an additional chair in your living room.

Our most popular velvet design is the Greta footstool. Greta comes in four beautiful colours – navy, gold, teal and burnt orange. These elegant little footstools are the perfect addition to your existing furniture, or to add a pop of colour to your area!

Armchair:

Velvet armchairs come in many shapes and sizes depending on what you’re looking for. We have solid colour, wooden legs, rounded backs, full squares, geometric shapes, scalloped edges… and so much more. There’s something here for everyone! You just need to make the tough decision of which you like the most. The Avoca velvet armchair in teal is one of our personal favourites. The curved, scalloped back with tall, tapered legs and deep, foam-filled seats for your comfort. The luxurious teal colour interest and makes a striking statement to your area!

Dining Chairs:

There’s something to classy about velvet dining chairs. Providing comfort while eating is a good thing in our book! Rich velvet with gold accents is the definition of style. The dining chair that immediately comes to mind is the Gambino Pink Velvet dining chair. This chair is the perfect, subtle pop of colour for your dining set up. Dusty pink with gorgeous gold is a match made in Heaven! Gambino is easy to style as it has curved edges and looks like a miniature armchair with its curved sides – a bucket chair for your comfort!

2-Seaters:

The Langley velvet 2-seater sofa is a customisable couch, so you can choose the colours for your space! Want something slightly darker to compliment your space without being black? Why not try our deep grey ‘charcoal’ colour. Or a statement piece? The fiery hot red ‘chilli’ could be the one for you! This high demand sofa is expertly handmade with foam-filled cushions for the ultimate experience of comfort. You could fall asleep on this couch and not complain about it – it’s like sitting on a cloud.

3-Seaters:

If you like exaggerated corners, nice square sides, the Hunter 3-seater sofa in navy is for you. Enveloped in velvet, the clever buttoned backrest of Hunter is made for your own ease. With matching items available, you can make a whole set of navy goodness in your living room. This sofa is an elegant addition to any room!

Bedframes:

Velvet headboard and bedframes are all the rage now, between pure velvet and the trendier crushed velvet. This velvet touch provides you with a bedframe fit for royalty. Here at Michael Murphy Home Furnishing, we have a wide range of tufting available depending on the finish you are looking for.

One of the more beneficial velvet bedframes would be Hemsby as this bed has storage under the frame. Hidden inside the base is a plethora of spacious storage solutions – simply pull the velvet ties at the base of the bed to reveal this treasure trove of space! Who doesn’t love a good storage solution? Cleverly designed, the Hemsby bed frame encapsulates both style and function. Both the expansive headboard and sturdy bed base are covered in a sumptuous grey velvet.

Taking care of velvet:

There are many things to remember when taking care of velvet. It is a particular fabric and requires some maintenance to make sure it is always looking its best! One of the easiest things you can do is regularly shift the back cushions and rotate the seat cushions. This prevents the development of pressure marks where the cushions meet. And with this, keeping your cushions plump and lively by shaking and fluffing maintains the fullness of the velvet and guards against wrinkles. Another thing you can do is brush your velvet. To do this, you employ a gentle clothes brush to brush your sofa on a weekly basis. This will preserve the pristine condition of your velvet furniture!

If you find your velvet is dirty, the first thing you need to do ahead of cleaning is understanding the direction of the fabric’s nap. Then you can initiate the cleaning process by using a soft clothes brush or vacuum cleaner to remove any loose debris. If you are dealing with liquid spillages, use a dry, absorbent cloth and gentle dab – not rub!!!! – the affected area. Start on the outside and more inwards towards the spill.

For thorough cleaning, opt for a specialised upholstery or carpet cleaning solution! Many water-based solutions are suitable for cleaning velvet.
