Whether it’s scrolling through our phones late at night, binge-watching ‘just one more’ episode, or tossing and turning on the wrong pillow, quality sleep can sometimes feel out of reach. But here’s the thing: sleep isn’t just about feeling rested. It’s a science, and it plays a crucial role in our health, mood, and overall well-being.

Stage 1 – Light Sleep: This is that lovely dozing off stage where your body starts to relax, but you’re still somewhat aware of your surroundings. Ever had that feeling where you’re falling in your sleep? That’s your muscles twitching as they start to unwind and catch up with your mind!

Stage 2 – Slightly Deeper Sleep: Your heart rate slows, your body temperature drops, and now your brainwaves start to change too. This is the longest stage of the sleep cycle and is essential for feeling refreshed in the morning.

  • Mood: Have you ever noticed that everything always feels ten times worse after a bad night’s sleep? That’s because lack of sleep affects your mood, making you more stressed and irritable. Good sleep helps to keep your emotions balanced and helps you handle life’s ups and downs.
  • Immune System: Your body does a lot of repair work while you’re asleep, including strengthening your immune system. Less sleep means you’re more susceptible to cold, flu, and other pesky illnesses.

  • Create a Sleep Sanctuary: Your bedroom should be a haven for rest. Keep it cool, dark, and quiet. Invest in a comfortable pillow and the right mattress for your sleeping position (yes, it does make a difference).   • Stick to a Schedule: Your body loves routine. Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day – yes, even on weekends! This does actually make a big difference in helping to regulate your internal clock.
  • Limit Screens Before Bed: Look, we know this, you know this, but it has to be said. Avoiding your phone or your TV for at least an hour before bedtime helps your brain to wind down. The blue light coming from your screens tricks your brain into thinking it’s daytime. If you don’t like to just sit with your thoughts (understandable), try reading a book, or doing something with your hands, like journalling or crafting.
  • Create (and stick to) a Wind Down Routine: Give yourself the time to relax before bed. Read a book, take a warm bath or shower, or try some deep breathing. By creating a routine, you’ll give your body a recognisable signal each night that it’s time to rest.
