Styling furniture in a small space… can it be done? Absolutely! There are a few tips and tricks to getting it right, which is where we step in. In this entry, we’ll talk about different ways to create a stylish (but still functional!) environment at home! It’s true that these days, space is a luxury, and though we love our cosy apartments, it can be difficult at times to find make the most of the space without it feeling too cluttered, or ‘loud’, as my parents would say. The first step is to acknowledge the space available to you, and we go from there! Buckle in!
1. Zoning Time
Now that we’ve squared up how much space is available, the first step is to divide your home into ‘zones’ – this doesn’t have to be concrete or finite, but it’s a good way to separate each area by function. Think about where you eat, sleep, work, and relax. If you need a space for exercise, study, or play – mentally add this to your list too. This is especially helpful if you have an open-plan layout. We recommend using rugs to distinguish between each space. This can help to create a cosy feel to your place, and if you can arrange your furniture around each space to accomodate both the function of each zone and flow between them, you should find the place seems more organised already.
2. Multi-Functional Furniture
If you’re lacking in space, furniture that can do it all is your new best friend. Consider a storage bed, or a blanket box to free up some space in your bedroom. Or, if you entertain guests often – look into a sofa bed that can be used in two different ways. If you have a lot of mouths to feed at mealtimes, but need the space during the day for various other things, then an extendable dining table is the perfect solution! When every square metre counts, you need to be crafty when it comes to storage.
3. Look up!
Don’t put all the pressure on your floor to do the work – your walls are free real estate ready to be used. Using wall-mounted shelves, or even tall bookcases like this one are gamechangers when it comes to taking advantage of height. It also gives you the opportunity to declutter your floor and add some decor to the walls! Showcase your favourite books or even add some plant pots to balance the look.
4. Size does matter!
It’s true! When it comes to furniture, size really does matter, especially when you’re working with limited space. Pieces that are too big for a small room can result in the space looking cramped or cluttered. It also leaves you with less room! So, all in all, a definite disadvantage. Here’s how to fix it!
Remember that oversized sofas or chunky coffee and side tables can overwhelm a small area – so instead of looking for a three seater, consider a two seater, or even a cuddler! To complete the look, we recommend the Dusk coffee table; perfect for small spaces.
5. Lighten up!
Though you may not think it, colour is an important part in this equation! Choosing the right colours can really affect how a space feels – and how you perceive it. Just check out our blog about The Psychology of Colour if you want to learn more! To make the most of a small space, it’s important again not to let the colour overpower the room. Lean towards light colours like soft beige, cream, or even pastel shades. These bright hues can reflect more light, so they can help a space feel brighter and more open. It might be your first instinct to stick to a white, but don’t fall into that trap – it can create a bit of a cold, sterile appearance.
But, I love bold colours, you say! And we hear you! This doesn’t mean you need to shy away from them completely. Try using your favourite vibrant shades as an accent wall to tie the room together. This works especially well if you have furniture in a matching colour.
6. Harness the magic of mirrors!
If you’re still stuck, and feel cramped in a small space, there’s one final trick up our sleeves – mirrors! They’re great for reflecting light and can be really useful in creating an illusion of space. A good way to do this is by positioning a big mirror, like the Jennifer opposite one of your windows. This will help to bounce the light around the room and, in turn, make your space seem bigger.
Remember, small spaces shouldn’t be stressful!
Use these tips the next time you need to decorate or vamp up a small space – remember that by using light and visual tricks you can create the illusion of space! Keep it simple, and remember that in the end, style does matter! Keep furniture simple, compact, and make use of any hidden storage you can!
