Let’s take a moment to appreciate the furniture you’re reading this from right now. The chair you’re in, table you’re leaning against – even the counter you’re not really supposed to be sitting on. Each and every piece of furniture we see every day comes to us after years and eras of changing culture, design, and values. Furniture is more than just a place to sit or surface to eat on (or work from, post 2020). From the grandeur of the Baroque era to the mimalism of modern design, each movement has left its mark on the furniture we see and use today. Buckle up and join us on our journey through the rich history of furniture design!
1. The Dawn of Furniture
Imagine this: it’s 3,000BC, and you’re in a neolithic home. Your mammoth hunting knife broke last week but hey, at least you know how to use fire. Ooga booga. In your neolithic home, your ‘furniture’ (we’re being generous) is carved from stone, because wood isn’t exactly easy to come by. Comfortable? Not so much. Functional? Definitely.
2. Not So Humble Beginnings
Imagine walking into an Egyptian palace – grand thrones proudly made of carved wood and carefully adorned with gold leaf. Now, strolling through a Roman villa; elegant marble and practical wooden benches. Early furniture served a dual purpose, clearly evident in these two historical epochs. Both a statement of status and a functional addition, these early pieces were all about durability, whether it was a stone bench or beautifully crafted wooden chair.
3. Medieval Minimalism (Sort Of)
Jumping forward in time to medieval Europe, furniture became more and more about practicality rather than pizzazz. Homes were painfully communal spaces, so furniture needed to be durable; heavy and built to last – think enormous wooden tables where entire families (and remember, they were bigger back then!) and their neighbours gathered for meals. Though not seen as often, there was beauty, too, in this era. Intricate carvings on chests and chairs show us an early craftsmanship ahead of its time. If you’re looking for a slightly more modern take on this era, the Petra or Kingston Dining Ranges are great choices!
4. The Renaissance (Europe got French, Furniture Got Fancy!)
When we think of the Renaissance, our minds all naturally go to thoughts of rediscovery and reinvention, and while these are true for art, science, and schools of thought – they also apply to furniture! The upper class wanted their homes to look as good as their outfits, which led to furniture becoming an art form. Think carved wood, gilded details and lush, luxurious fabrics. (Don’t think about the guillotine)
Fun fact! This was also when four-poster beds rose to fashion! These were the ultimate way to show off wealth and status. And while we don’t sell those, we do sell a range of other bed frames!
5. Modern Marvels
With the Industrial Revolution in the 18th and 19th centuries came furniture for everyone! Suddenly, furniture wasn’t just for the rich. The advent of factories made it possible to produce furniture both quickly and affordably.
And then came the 20th Century – a true design revolution! Scandi design, Bauhaus principles, and a focus on simplicity and functionality made furniture more stylish and accesible than ever.
6. The Irish Influence
Just like our own long-lived cultural history, Ireland has our own rich furniture tradition. Our rich natural resources have always played a role in our furniture design. Native hardwoods like oak and elm were commonly used, prized for both their durability and beauty. Oak is still widely used today, showing a lasting effect.
Today, Irish furniture design is a vibrant mix of tradition and innovation. At Michael Murphy Home Furnishing, we’re proud to be part of this legacy. While we embrace modern design trends, we have always been deeply inspired by Ireland’s rich furniture-making heritage.
