5 Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Mattress

Considering we spend about a third of our lives in bed (who knew?), having the right mattress is absolutely crucial. Your mattress plays a huge role in how you sleep each night, so by extension, having the right mattress makes all the difference. More than just providing overall comfort, your mattress supports your body, helps to maintain proper spinal alignment, and benefits your long-term health in a number of ways. Unfortunately, unlike diamonds, mattresses are not forever (though they are for a very long time. Just not eternity. Sorry).

Over time, even the highest quality mattresses begin to lose their support, and you begin to lose the level of comfort you’ve been accustomed to. Many people tend to hold onto their mattresses for longer than they really should, usually without realising that their sleep quality could be affected. If you’ve been waking up feeling less rested than usual, your mattress could well be the culprit. Here are five common signs that it might me time to start thinking about a replacement!

1. Your Mattress Is More Than 7-10 Years Old

Age is one of the clearest indicators that it may be time for a new mattress. Most mattresses are designed to last between seven and ten years, and while this can vary depending on a number of factors (the materials used, and how well the mattress has been looked after being the two most important), generally a mattress becoming a teenager is a sign it’s time to let it go.

Over time, the internal structure naturally begins to wear down. Foams will soften, springs lose their tension, and the overall support becomes less consistent (like your body after you turn thirty, really). Even if your mattress still looks fine on the surface, it may no longer be providing the support your body needs for a comfortable night’s sleep.

2. You Wake Up with Aches and Pains

If you find yourself regularly waking up feeling stiff, sore, or achey, it may be your mattress to point fingers towards. A mattress should support your body evenly and help keep your spine in a comfortable, neutral position throughout the night.

As mattresses age, they can lose their ability to distribute weight properly. This may cause your body to sink too deeply in some areas, while leaving others unsupported. Put shortly, this leads to discomfort. If you find your aches tend to loosen out and ease up as you move around during the day, your mattress may be the issue.

3. You Notice Sagging or Visible Wear

Sometimes the issues are plain to see. Take a close look at the surface of your mattress. If you notice dips, sagging areas, or visible indents that may or may not resemble you, it’s a sign the materials inside are beginning to break down.

These indentations often develop gradually as the mattress absorbs years of repeated pressure. Unfortunately, once sagging occurs, it rarely improves, and it can affect how evenly your weight is supported. Even small dips can lead to discomfort over time, so make sure to throw an eye over your mattress from time to time as you change your bedsheets.

4. You Can Feel Springs or Lumps

Now, if this is the case, you shouldn’t need my approval. Just get the new mattress, if that’s the sign you’re looking for.

If your mattress has springs and you can feel them through the surface, it’s typically a sign that the internal support system is wearing out. Similarly, lumps in foam or padding layer can mean that the materials inside have shifted or deteriorated.

A mattress should feel smooth and supportive across the entire sleeping surface. When lumps, bumps, or hard areas appear, it can make it tougher to find a comfortable sleeping position, and may lead to disrupted sleep.

5. Your Sleep Needs Have Changed

Your mattress might have been perfect for you when you first bought it, but your sleep needs can change over time. Factors such as lifestyle changes, different sleeping positions, or something as simple as getting older can influence what level of support feels more comfortable.

Some people find they need more support as they get older, while others prefer additional cushioning to relieve pressure on the hips and shoulders. Upgrading to a mattress that better suits your current needs can make a noticeable difference to your sleep quality.
